It wasn't that bad, but it was bad indeed

Warning: Spoilers

I despised the very idea of this movie existing, but after watching it... it turns out it wasn't that bad! But... that doesn't mean it was good.

I'll try to be as objective as possible, since some people here aren't reviewing... they're just spewing their hate.

STORY 1/10

It's pretty decent and acceptable... within the first 15 minutes. Then, something that had so much potential (a crown that could help you dominate the world) is all wasted... on a high-school. And instead of an epic fight or something of the sorts (in order to retrieve the crown)... we've got a high- school dance. It all goes downhill from this point. Clichés are everywhere, and of course, as you might expect, the villain steals the crown just in time, turning into a sort of demon who can mentally-control others... and yes, she wants to rule Equestria. How original.

However, I'm giving it 1/10 instead of 0/10 because of how good the adapting-to-the-human-world-and-tech thing was. It was pretty original and it made me chuckle plenty of times. Everything else was... shameful.

-----

CHARACTERS 4/10

Every pony in Ponyville has a mirror version in the "human" world (they even have the same name... how lazy you have to be to give them the same name, Hasbro), so personalities and character development are pretty much the same as the ones seen in the show. However, we've got an archetypical spiteful/bossy teenage girl as a villain (yay originality) and plenty of fan-service throughout the movie (4th-dimentional Pinkie, a "so awesome!" from Rainbow Dash and an extremely moe Fluttershy).

One thing I really disliked about the characters is how pretty everyone is. There are no short/fat/ugly people. Everyone's tall, with an athletic body (despite most of them not even practicing sports) and a gorgeous face (heck, even the nerds are gorgeous... they're just pretty people with ugly clothes), and the school's one and only bully is our villain: a teenage girl. Really?

And last but not least, the society-portrayal made when Sunset Shimmer turns into a demon was downright pathetic. Pretty much nobody panics after seeing a FRIGGIN' DEMON, and nobody else outside of the school seems to care about the intense and noisy beams of magic/explosions. It's like they're used to it. And what's worse: when Twilight and friends defeat Sunset Shimmer, the once spiteful/bossy/I'm-gonna-rule-Equestria villain is now a crybaby who just wanted friends. What. The. Stuff.

-----

ANIMATION 8/10

The animation was pretty good. No complaints at all. They did a really good job and the character design ended up being cute! That was a surprise.

-----

MUSIC 7/10

The soundtrack was good as well. The songs were cheesy, girly and catchy, just like you'd expect from a My Little Pony movie.

-----

BREAKDOWN - 5/10

Good animation/soundtrack but terrible plot and character development. It perpetuates a sexist view of both genres (boys play rock & roll, girls put on their make-up) and it was made to sell new merchandise, so yeah, not really a good movie, even though I love My Little Pony.

Don't give it a higher note just because it's for kids and don't give it a lower one because you were disappointed. There's a whole lot of masterpieces in the film history that were originally made for kids. Rate this with the same criteria that you'd rate a Pixar movie.

Hasbro, I Hate You!

Warning: Spoilers

Toys! Toys! Toys! That's all Hasbro cares about, who cares if it ruins a show people love! Hooray! Equestria Girls was Awful! There was no effort whatsoever - except in the animation; THAT'S IT!

In case you don't know what it's about, Princess Twilight goes into the human world because Celestia's former student, Sunset Shimmer, steals her crown and takes it to the human world. There Twilight is sent to high school and goes through all the high school clichés you could possibly imagine: outcast, bullied, friends with outcast, becomes popular, gets a boyfriend - the bully's ex-boyfriend (does that sound familiar?), and being Fall Formal Princess.

It is the clichés that ruin the whole story. At least with Mean Girls, they developed a better storyline - even if it was exaggerated; the same could be said for High School Musical, which is less annoying compared to this. The story could have been great, but it is horrible! For starters, the clichés, solving problems in the blink of an eye, and more. I've gone through the clichés in the previous paragraph, here's problem solving: The five friends (who are humans) Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, and Applejack hate each other, but then a few words from Twilight and they're friends again! That's not how you mend a friendship! Like for example if you know Applejack and Rainbow Dash, you know they are highly competitive against each other, so when they're attempting to mend their friendship on the distant soccer fields we see them hug! Did I forget to mention that they are highly competitive and demand an apology from each other for whatever unexplained reason, and just because Twilight says to talk it out they instantly solve it in a second? That's not how fixing a broken relationship works! What I hate even worse was that while the story was trying to be original it ended up being more clichéd than original, I'm specifically talking about the cafeteria song. Oh I want to bang my head against the wall just hearing that song! Sunset Shimmer is the most popular girl in the high school, and Twilight needs to desperately win the crown back for the Fall Formal. So how do they get this brand new girl who never registered for class to be even more popular? By putting on a flashmob in the cafeteria and singing how differences are awesome, and how Twilight's differences outshine Sunset Shimmer. If someone sang that to you, would you even buy that and vote for them just because someone sang to you how differences make you ten times better than someone you've already known? It doesn't work like that! Even as a non realistic film it makes no sense. Also when Twilight reveals to her friends that she's a pony in human form and they're instantly cool with it! If your closest friend told you he/she was a pony in human form, is that how you would react? It's too weird to think about, but the story must rush; no time to have any real developed reactions! Even if a movie was 90 minutes long, it would be enough time to go into real character development and emotions. That's what I hate about this film: how rushed everything is, there's no time to enjoy anything, and it is just another excuse for Hasbro to make more toys out of My Little Pony!

However, to be fair, the only thing I really enjoy is the animation. It still looks beautiful, even the designs of the mane six looks great. Aside from that, there is nothing valuable to enjoy. Don't throw in the "It's a kid's film" line, because whether it was made for kids or adults, this film has no excuse for how bad and pointless it is!

Hugely disappointing, and this is from a big MLP:FIM fan

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is in my opinion one of the best animated shows in recent years, so that in itself was reason enough to see My Little Pony: Equestria Girls. It is just really sad however that was so good about the show would turn out to be the complete opposite in the movie(non-US viewers can see the whole thing on Youtube, providing of course that it stays up), which I found to be a huge disappointment all round. The animation had flat colours and rather robotic character designs, a big contrast to the vibrant and rounded animation that the show had, the latter of which was much more appealing. The characters also were not just robotic but also anaemic, I am almost certain that parents especially- some people have mentioned it already- will have a field day saying how bad a message it is for girls, I'm not personally going to spout that but people will find it a problem. The music is just as disappointing, dull and forgettable rather than whimsical. And the songs made for painful listening, I wasn't a big fan of the songs in the original 80s movie but even they weren't as bad as the ones here, though arguably the songs here are sung better but not by much. These songs are not catchy in the slightest, the melodies have no energy or distinction and while it may not be the case I would be surprised if anybody after watching the movie could remember a single lyric or note.

The dialogue sounds tired and too high-school cliché-sounding, any attempts to be witty or funny came across as forced and any sweet moments were mawkish. There are references to the show but they were for me clumsily handled and they were as true to the show the movie gets. Even though the movie is short, because the story is so paper thin(25 minute episode quality with lots of filler in a film over twice as long!), completely lacking in any originality of its own and too padded out it feels much longer, I also felt sometimes as though I was being talked down to and I don't like that. The way the characters were handled was disappointing too, their distinct likable personalities were one of the best things about the show but here their personalities are shallow at best and non-existent at worst, consequently it was very difficult to get properly invested in them. We have a very talented voice cast here, Tara Strong being the most prolific and recognisable, and they do their best but their material is beneath them to the extent I found they were wasted.

Overall, a huge disappointment, doesn't stop me from being a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic but this movie does not do one of the best animated shows in recent years justice. 1/10 Bethany Cox

A blatant marketing movie that undermines the show...

For a start... it definitely did not warrant a theatre release.

No additional effort was put into the animation beyond the TV series other than the opening credits animation, at all. Would have been a nice two-parter to link the existing My Little Pony seasons 3 and 4 together.

Two, it's so obvious the entire movie is a giant advertisement for Hasbro to sell anthro-based dolls based on popular characters. The way the characters are introduced and stylised, it's just glaring and grating.

The basic story? As predictable as ever, even for a MLP episode. Which is fine for a MLP episode, but not for a movie, hence back to my original belief it didn't warrant a theatre release. The fact that it's set in such a tedious and over-used setting as a school formal? Awful. So much opportunity for this to have been done better was wasted on a cliché. The ponies are regressed to teenage years when in Ponyville they are already mares, ie mature. The movie should have reflected this, and used it to encourage girls (and guys) in a more positive direction than what it does.

The writing was about as standard as the series, but I'm disappointed with the whole image of the movie. Everyone is thin and anaemic, with the exception of Snails, and lo and behold, the unpopular "bad guy henchman" is fat. The ONLY fat person in the entire movie. In the series, all the ponies are rounded, or at least full-bodied; all this movie does is perpetuate the stick-insect mentality of fashion that girls are now being encouraged to pursue. Which leads to...

Concepts of friendship are nice to see in this movie, and I'm glad they are there. But the series does a much better job of teaching those concepts in a manner that isn't muddied by imagery that is counter-productive to many children's' self-esteem. This movie is a step backwards for the quality of the show, not a step forwards.

So, overall? Poor. It *could* have been so much more. Instead, we got dreck. It's 4, perhaps a 5 out of 10. For the absolute littlies only, and I say that with hesitation given the body-image impressions it's setting up for them.

I hope this stays a one-off, and is never attempted again.

This is not what lured millions to MIP:FIM

First off, I enjoyed the beginning of the movie where they're still ponies. I like how it picks up right after season 3 ended. Its a great set up but then it shows its true colors, and that would be a movie designed to rival with the Bratz Monster High doll collection. The legs are three-fourths of their body. They ALL wear short skirts and knee-high hooker boots. It only worked for Apple Jack because she would wear cowgirl boots but a skirt? No she'd wear denim shorts or jeans. Rainbow Dash especially was reduced to playing soccer in a skirt. We get it Hasbro, they're girls but they don't all have to dress that way. The skin doesn't bother me just because it eliminates racist thoughts. In Equestria, fur color was never meant to show race. They're all different colors. However, Rarity and Sweetie-Bell look like corpses. I liked seeing all the ponies from the show shown as humans, even though their design overall was done in a much more mediocre way than what I've seen from the fandom. Other issues that really bothered me was the cliché high school drama, which is what turned me off in the first place. The antagonist uses cell phones to cyber bully Twilight, which is far from what I expect from this show. The love-at first sight had my eyes rolling like many other things. Some of the characters don't seem to be "in-character" such as Fluttershy. There's no ways she would break out into song in front of the entire school. I had to skip through some of the songs, which I've never had to do for the TV show. The big turn off was Sunset Shimmer setting out to rule the high school. Really, being princess of the high school, that's just lame! Like it or not this movie was made to sell creepy humanized pony dolls, which will fail in my opinion. Hopefully season four of the show will get it back on the horse.

A toy commercial that SOMEHOW is tolerable

Warning: Spoilers

Last night, I watched Equestria Girls... Yeah, yeah, I'm a brony, don't judge me.

On to the review: I don't like the concept because, well, let me put it this way: I enjoy MLP:FiM not only as a good, heartfelt and often humorous cartoon, but as a refreshing escape from reality... which is why I feel humans shouldn't have anything to do this with show.

I understand the concept of "trying to fit in" and "friendship is everywhere", but it could just as easily have been applied in a setting where humans don't exist.

I also feel it's just Hasbro's attempt to cash in on the "high-school-girl" bandwagon for obvious reasons and that the conflict of winning the title at the prom dance... is so tired and cliché that your better off watching a half-baked teen drama from last decade. If you want a good MODERN high school dramedy film, watch Easy A because it has more believable characters and shout-outs to classic films of that type.

Another point that annoys me is Spike as a dog... and on top of that, he STILL loves Rarity (as a human) in the human world... I don't like this because it's more creepy than charming in that it seems to promote bestiality, and for a movie aimed at kids, this is beyond disgraceful.

Which brings me to my next point, the film makes a point of saying that people should judge Twilight Sparkle by what she DOES instead of how she LOOKS, which wouldn't be a bad moral if all but one of the "humans" in this film weren't drawn with a thin physique and the girls wearing short, low-cut clothes. MLP:FiM would never teach kids that body shape and choice of clothes matter, they would teach you what's on the inside does, but this film's attempt at teaching you "it's what's on the inside that counts" is contradictory, to say the least.

On a side note, why are the Cutie Mark Crusaders bumped up to early high school age? On the show, they're like the equivalent of 8-10 year olds, so why are they like 14-15 years old here? Are the people at Hasbro a bunch of pedophiles or something? And unlike the show itself, the use of modern technology and even vague product placement for YouTube will just make it more dated as time goes by... I won't act like the show itself isn't "modern", but it'll be timeless compared to this.

But, to be fair, there WERE some good jokes at some points, the film DOES actually teach you about the true meaning of friendship and unlike the show itself, I actually came close to LIKING a couple of the songs in this film.

For me, the concept didn't work and clearly reeks of focus groups and bias in regards to its target audience. But somehow, some good writing, humour and toe-tapping music left a light at the end of the tunnel. I just don't think modernization is necessary for MLP:FiM, because of the aforementioned "escape from reality" bit. But at least it was better written than "Magical Mystery Cure" (a REAL MLP:FiM travesty).

Granted, it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be, but this isn't a film I would've paid $10 for when it was in theatres. I just hope that Hasbro doesn't strike out again... And now, I'll wait patiently for Season 4 this fall.

Quality Comes First Before The Money

Warning: Spoilers

This movie was only made to make money like the Barbie Dolls or American Girl Dolls. Sadly though like Planes they worried more about the toys and less about the film which brings this movie crashing down.

~ There are plots in the movie that are never addressed. Example: Like Why did Celestia want to see Twilight Sparkle in the first place? Why couldn't she have asked/ tried to convince Principal Celestia to switch out the fake crown and the real crown?

~ The songs are forgettable pop songs that I wouldn't pay 99 cents for if they were on I-tunes.

~The plot is so clique that, it kind of hurts that this is related to My Little Pony. Tell me if this sounds familiar: a new female girl joins a school and has to become popular in order to beat the mean girl. So she gathers a team of unlikely heroes while bringing the school closer than ever. Yeah, that's what this story is. The TV show was creative with the mythology and how this world works in its own unique way. This is another boring high school movie that we've all seen before. Even the Barbie Diaries was more realistic. At least the pacing was better.

~ The characters in this movie are boring. Even Pinkie Pie isn't very funny in this movie. She can be crazy all she wants but crazy doesn't guarantee good comedy. The others are all boring one dimensional people/ ponies.

~ Like I mentioned before I think the pacing of this movie is its biggest downfall. One minute the girls are all mad and hate each other then the next thing they do is hug and laugh with each other. What is the point of having them as enemies if you were going to bring them together in less than a few minutes? Plus how does Twilight Sparkle resolve bringing the school together clique? By singing a song about working together clique. Sorry but that just seemed too out of place. I know in the show they sing but in this movie it doesn't work.

The reason I give it one star is that at least the animation is okay if not weird but aside from that skip the movie and go watch the cartoon.

(Also nothing that happens in this movie has any impact on the story ark in the show. They act like this movie never even happened.)

This is complete and utter rubbish

Warning: Spoilers

Good children shows are relatively hard to come by. This is mostly because a lot of people think ''it is for children! Therefore, it is allowed to be (slightly) rubbish''. I see that as an insult towards children and I'm under the believe that this is bad for their cognitive development. The stories should be simple, not broken.

So, when I heard about Friendship is Magic and the quality it had in terms of the story, its characters and how nicely the fantastical world of Equestria was build up, I was delighted to hear that. I became a fan of the first 3 seasons, and I recommend sometimes that kids should watch this show, but I tend to try to stay away from the internet periphery demographic.

When the main character Twilight Sparkle became a princess at the end of season 3, I saw that as a way for the narrative to get into routes no one has ever gone before – think about Aesop's regarding the mistakes of micromanaging, Aesop's about what makes a leader different from a boss on the work floor and all that stuff. And that Twilight can grow as a character could make this the best build-up ''princessy'' of all times. I mean that.

But then came… this movie. What kind of idiotic producer at Hasbro asked for this? Okay, I understand that little girls drool over high school musicals and over ponies. But combining them? That is like saying boys like dinosaurs and cars so we're going to make a movie regarding Autobots getting into the past defending themselves against dinosaurs. Although that may sound appealing to some people, it makes no sense in context and gives no room to make a coherent story with interesting characters, themes and lore. And that's exactly what happened here.

But anyway, let's get to the movie. The movie starts off with the mane 6 going to the Crystal Empire where, after arrival, they're instantly shoved off to bed by Celestia so the next plot point can take place instead of using this moment to properly set up the plot.

Then Sunset Shimmers comes in and steals the crown Twilight has for the Elements of Harmony and goes back into a portal after the crown fell through it to go after it.

After that everyone comes together and Celestia explains that the portal leads to another world. This portal would open every 30 moons (or, 2.5 years) and that Sunset was a student of hers before Twilight. Although… Twilight was a student of Celestia since she was a little filly and Sunset and Twilight seem to be the same age. But that is not the worst of it. Let's take a step back here.

The portal opens every 2.5 years. Sunset left Equestria before Twilight became Celestia's student, and Twilight had never seen or heard of her before. Strange, since being a student of the princess is a kind of a big deal, especially when you suddenly disappear. but now comes the worst part. Let's say that Sunset left 2 iterations ago that the portal opened, so 5 years. This means that she left years before the Nightmare Moon event at the beginning of the series. So, she isn't supposed to know a thing about the Crystal Empire where the portal was moved to, she doesn't know about the Elements, doesn't know Twilight is a princess, that she was there for that Princesses summit, that she had the crown with her, where she slept and so on and so forth. This has got to be the biggest plot hole I've seen since those in Mass Effect 3's ending.

The rest of the movie is also filled with plot holes. Why for instance does Sunset Shimmer know that bringing an Element to another world would cause it to change? Why does an Element of freaking Harmony cause a big hole in the ground? Why can it be corrupted by a school girl where even Discord could not manipulate it? and of course there are the insulting hand waves to push off any questions regarding the lore of the world. And of course the Element of Magic now can work alone, thus rendering the other elements obsolete.

And then there are the characters. Sunset Shimmers has no personality besides being a bitch. There is no remorse, no pity, no understanding why she got that way or anything. But after she got defeated she starts to cry and feather fall to the ground and suddenly all is forgiven… wait, what?

And I don't have anything regarding Flash Sentry becoming Twilight's boyfriend. In fact, a nicely set up relationship would be awesome! It could work out in season 4 - have Twilight share things with him, develop their characters, have their flaws sometimes create a bit of conflict but let the romance and caring and friendship always shine things through. That is what was supposed to happen. But no, Flash is just the regular clichéd High School good guy and has no personality besides being ''nice''. This is NOT why I was a fan of the series.

And after everything got resolved, the entire audience knows that Twilight has to hurry up to get home but decides to stay for a while and dance. I could not have any appreciation for that scene, because I was only thinking "get back home you moron!".

So, also with Season 4 in mind which is also insultingly bad, the lore of Equestria is gone. Just. Gone. Any form of magic which is supposed to be consistent is toast or destroyed. There is nothing of value anymore. And that is a complete shame because the end of Season 3 gave it so many possibilities.

And now I need a drink.

Not Magical. Wasted potential

For years, fans of the weirdly popular "My Little Pony Friendship is Magic" series have been flooding the Internet with fan art of the main characters in human form. In perhaps the biggest piece of fan service ever, the creators of the original TV series have produced a whole new movie with the very premise of your favorite characters in human form and going to high school. Yes, we all want to see our favorite characters go to high school (or turn human if they aren't already). Greek Legends go to high school in Class of the Titans, Rugrats go to school in All Grown Up,Transformers became humans at one point. Heck there was even a "Gotham High" cartoon series planned which recasts Batman and his villains as high school students..

Our story follows Twilight Sparkle as she pursues a previously unheard of rival named Sunset Shimmer through a magic portal in order to recover her magic crown that was stolen. Twilight ends up in another world where she is a human, there are human equivalents of every pony she has known in Ponyville and they all go to the same Canterlot High school. Once again the fish out of water, Twilight must start from scratch to try and fit in with this new world and make friends with these familiar characters all over again. Now here comes the stinker. Sunset shimmer has apparently been manipulating students against each other through social media. an embarrassing youtube video, photoshopped pictures and anonymous text messages are enough to break up a group of girls who have been best of friends since grade school. So Twilight would help to mend friendships that were torn because the most gullible girls in the world believed some fake phone messages over actually talking to each other and ascertaining the truth. Heck even the vice principle is fooled by some badly photocropped (as in physically cut and paste) pictures. Is this the most gullible school or what. fine. Now we have the big prom, which is one huge popularity contest. instead of showing twilight winning over the hearts and minds of her school mates through her honesty, sincerity and helpfulness, she wins them over through the magic of song and dance.

Yes, the synopsis sure does sound shallow. Alas, the movie itself is shallow and that is its main sin here. But before harping on that, one must acknowledge how true to the original series this movie is. Other than cosmetic changes, all your favorite characters are exactly the same as they were when they were ponies. Fluttershy is still the little shrinking violet with an obsession for cute little animals, Applejack is still the country bumpkin, Rarity still the glamor queen, Pinky Pie still the wacko psycho and Rainbow Dash the tomboy sporty one. Their new designs as human beings take bit of getting used to with the whole quasi-Japanese-anime look with their oversized heads, tiny bodies and weird skin colour (including purple, green, pale blue etc) but once you do, they do have a certain adorable quality to them. The animation is smooth and surprisingly good considering it was animated in adobe flash. This pushes the envelope on what can be done with the over-the-counter animation software.

Now compliments aside, Equestria girls is still a disappointment because it has so much wasted potential. When twilight first steps into high school, her culture shock and the montage that accompanies the inner monologue song she sings seems to paint the premise as a clever metaphor for growing up and transitioning from the magical innocence of early years (ala ponyville where all kinds of wonders exist) to the harsher reality of school politics, competition and boy/girl relationships. That is never developed any further. Also as mentioned before, the story has many lessons to teach but glosses over them in the short 70 odd minutes run time. Trivial lessons at that. If you realise, all she did was bring the 5 main friends back together by showing them how stupid they've been in believing anonymous text messages instead of talking things out like sensible people. Or how Twilight won over Rainbow Dash by stroking her ego and losing in a soccer game.

A much greater impact would be felt if the main 5 friends were never friends to begin with and Twilight helped bring them together despite their differences (this is hinted in one of the songs where it speaks about how twilight sparkle helped them look deeper and find the qualities that united them instead of those that separated them). If it were not for the top notch voice acting, the characters would come across as bland and just, once again, shallow.

Thus, wasted potential all around. we get good animation likable characters who are easy to relate to, and catchy tunes by composer Daniel Ingram which hardens back to the best of Disney animated musicals but that's about it. the movie had so much potential yet ended up trivializing many potentially deep themes on growing up, making friends and settling differences. With an all new premise the creators do nothing new with the story. Here we have an opportunity to do something different, to take the franchise one step further. Sadly there is nothing other than the premise to justify a full length feature film. Other movies based on ongoing TV series feature pivotal moments in a character's journey or a irreversible change to the status quo of that show. Nothing changes here. If not for the fact that the ponies are now human, the story would serve well enough as a 3 episode arc in the TV series

The Wizard: MLP Edition.

Warning: Spoilers

For those of you who don't know what the Wizard is, it's basically a movie about a kid who's a really good gamer and goes through contests. Near the end at the big climax, the battle between the kid and another good gamer with the Nintendo Power glove. the big reveal of the movie was Super Mario Brothers 3. Yes, the movie was feature length commercial for Nintendo products.

This movie is the ponified version of it.

The movie was generic. The characters apart from the main cast were generic and bland without much depth to them. Most of the songs were forgettable, and the humor was average at best. The ending could have been a lot better if they decided to make it so that instead of what Transpired, Sunset was stalling them and when they realised it was too late, the portal would have closed.

There are also some Easter eggs in the movie, including cameos from the Cutie Mark Crusaders, Vinyl Scratch, Silver Spoon and diamond Tiara. And Trixie who wanted peanut butter crackers. Sound effects include, Pinkie pie transforming, Wilhelm screaming, and a guy in the background doing the gangnam style dance.

This movie could have been good, but it was only just below the quality of the show, which was falling, mid season 3, which is just slightly better than fan fiction. Even worse, this movie was created for the purpose of selling dolls, but the dolls themselves suck. Google them if you have time.

The art style is also unappealing which is a shame because the animation on its own is well done. A way to improve the art style would have been to give the characters real skin tones. It doesn't really matter if they are all Caucasians at all.

But the writer could have done a much better job with the sub-plots. Most of them are just 2 minute fillers which could have just as easily been left out of the movie.

Looking back, at the movie as whole I came to thinking, maybe what I just said was a bit harsh. But then I realized that the plot actually was easy to follow. If you ignored all the plot hole watching the movie alone couldn't fill.

For instance how did Sunset know about Twilight's crown? How when she's been gone for over 2 years which covers pretty much the first 3 seasons. How did she even find the mirror when the entire city it was in was hidden and removed from the map for the past 1000 years?

It doesn't help that half the characters that matter are incompetent. For instance did you know that Sunset allegedly split the group apart by messing with one of the friends of the other. This means that all five friends had problems with one other then just stops socializing with the other 3. The worst of this is at the end of the movie, I'm not spoiling it see it for yourself it's just that stupid

The Phantom Menace of My Little Pony

Some shows fit as movies, like Firefly. Some shows on the other hand will never make good movies… unless it deviates from the show entirely. Because some of them are too complex and convoluted, like Game of Thrones, while other are the exact opposite: simple shows, which you do not watch for the plot.

That is where we encounter the first hurdle. Equestria Girls does not deviate from the show. It looks and feels like a bad pilot episode of a bad show… and they generally do not premiere in cinemas.

Equestria Girls disregards the strengths of the show: humans instead of ponies, generic high school setting instead of an interesting magical pony land and a bitch that is mean to everyone but obviously will be put back in line by Twilight Sparkle… instead of having none of that. The movie is so predictable, it hurts.

Apropos generic: Twilight Sparkle meets a boy who wears a black sports jacket, is athletic and plays the electric guitar like Jimi Henrix and is the antagonist's ex. And that is that.

There are a few songs featured in Equestria Girls, not unlike the show. These songs are quite different though. Techno and Pop has taken a hold of the score and it sounds like generic radio music. While the songs in "Friendship is Magic" were a part of an actual scene, they now seem randomly placed, just for the sake of it.

Friendship is Magic is animated with Flash and so is this movie. Unfortunately the humans look very stiff and unnatural. The movement of the humans appears choppy, almost as if they skipped frames, which would not surprise me. Lauren Faust's style of the show doesn't fit humans, and they look awkward. Probably, because no humans where originally planned.

One thing that bothered me from day one was the human counterparts of the ponies. It is as if someone (who never even watched "Friendship is Magic") designed them over a weekend, and a colorblind person at that who had no idea how to blend and mix colors. Color theory, what sorcery is this?

Firstly, they deiced to color the skin of the humans like the coat of the ponies. Twilight Sparkle has purple skin, Pinkie Pie is pink and Rainbow Dash is blue. It works for the ponies, but not for the humans. The colors clash like the titans did 1981 and it is not a pretty sight. But how else should we know what human is representing what pony, right…?

There are also small things like every one of the six girls are basically wearing the same things: knee high boots and skirts. Someone truly did an amazing copy paste job, efficiency at its best. Or an insult to Lauren Faust's original and varied design of the ponies. Like the show, the movie was made for girls, but the quality is lacking. It is a badly written mess with lackluster animation quality and laughable design. Equestria Girls is without a doubt the Phantom Menace of My Little Pony. AVOID

Much better then it's reported to be.

To me, this just seems like one big episode of the show, not really a movie. But that doesn't matter. The Show MLP: FiM started out as a children's show, (ages 6-11 or so) never mind the fan base, it should be treated as such. If you compare Equestria Girls to any other modern kids show made into a movie, it will be obvious the Equestria Girls raises the bar for animation, voice acting, song writing, and overall quality of the show. The songs are amazing, the voice acting is incredible, and the animation is better than any I've ever seen.

I strongly recommend this movie to families, bronies, and children. That's who it was made for.

10/10 - Fantastic movie.

A Waste of time

Warning: Spoilers

Being an open minded brony (Fan f My Little Pony), I decided to go and give this film a chance. It was possibly the most wasted 72 minutes of my life. It started in the Crystal Empire with the ponies, which was okay. But later on, Twilight goes to this stupid human world as a human. The animation looks horrifying, as they looked normal as ponies, but now are weird multi colored humans, which just looks wrong. But what an amazingly original plot! The protagonist must win the Princess of the crown, and is going against a popular but mean girl. That's never been done before(!)After most of the movie, which is exquisitely painful to see, as it's simply some stupid teenage girls singing forgettable pop songs and rubbishy pop-culture references, the film ends with Twilight winning the crown, but the antagonist stealing it anyway, leaving the majority of what happened entirely pointless and redundant. The Villain then turns into shark which Twilight has to jump over...err, I meant some demon thing which burns everything and mind controls almost everyone. But what's this? Twilight and her human friends (which are exactly the same as her pony ones, which is a stupid idea in itself) combine and use the power of the elements of harmony to defeat the villain. Wow. What an amazing plot twist. This is a completely original idea that has never been used before. Except at the end of the season 1 premiere for the My Little Pony TV show. And the end of the second season premiere. The ending is a complete disappointment, rendering the vast majority of the film a waste of time. The TV show is excellent though: I would thoroughly recommend watching that. However, regardless of whether you are a fan of the TV show or not, please do not see this film. If you absolutely must, see it online and do not waste any money on it for your sake. Please. The plot is awful, the humor is of average quality and the animation is somewhat jarring.

Why's everyone so hard on this?

Yes, it isn't quite as good as the show. Still, that shouldn't be held against the movie. This spinoff still maintains the MLP franchise's tendency to go beyond the stereotypicalness and obviousness of other girls shows and films.

Yeah, the high school format is predictable, but there is something about a pony in a human's body and a battle with a monster at the end that shakes things up some. Dialogue is on point and there are some funny bits.

The songs are all forgettable though, I'll give you that.

Way Way Above Expectations, Excellent Addition

Like any brony, I was nervous about Equestria Girls. It appeared that the show had sunk to an all time low, simply because it was now taking place in high school. After seeing EG for myself, I can say without a doubt in my mind that this movie is excellent. It actually is one of my favorite offerings from the show recently. Other bronies in the theater seemed to agree with me, as therfe was much applause at the end.

In case you're unfamiliar with premise, a rogue student of Celestia's, Sunset Shimmer, has stolen Twilight's crown. Since the elements of harmony are useless without it, Twilight must retrieve it from where it has been taken: the human world. Here we see her struggle to adopt human customs, as well as reuniting with the human counterparts of her Equestrian Friends.

The best part of this move is the humor and nods to the fans. The writers really did a great job in this area, evident by the laugh riots that arose multiple times. The shows sense of humor is definitely here, so rest easy. There are also plenty of nods to the supporting cast and background ponies, and it's a blast looking for them all.

The only problem to me was the songs. I enjoy the songs usually, but here there were quite a few, mostly towards the end, and they're more poppy than the shows usual style.

Other than that, I am very pleased with EG. The humor is great, seeing the ponies in a different setting is amusing, and is just a lot of fun if you're open to it. Also, stay for the end of the credits for a little surprise any fan will appreciate.

Horrible movie.

Warning: Spoilers

I'll keep this short, because I don't want to spend more time on this movie than absolutely necessary.

The movie had 5 minutes of ponies talking, 1 hour of "High School Musical"-style filler, 5 minutes of antagonist revelation and fighting, 10 minutes of ponies talking, credits.

There's nothing good I can say about this movie.

It is horrible that Hasbro thought this may be a good idea. It is similar to the last episode of Season 3 of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series, where a story line that could have spanned five or more episodes was squashed into a single 22 minute episode.

It seems that with Lauren Faust's creative input missing from the team, they are moving back to outdated stereotypes that should have been eradicated from popular media a long time ago.

The "humans" in the movie looked to be anorexic or bulimic and had about the same appeal to me that the creatures of Monsters High had. i.e. none.

I would not watch this with my kids even if I got paid to do so. It gives children the wrong impression of what they need to look like. It is as disturbing as the photo-shopping of models to make them look thin when they're already deathly thin to begin with.

The story was non-existent, the situations in the movie seemed to be carbon copies of situations from the first three seasons of the series, and there was little to nothing in the movie that had any worth whatsoever.

This is so bad, it's absurd.

Warning: Spoilers

I'm sorry, I hate writing this kind of review but that's essential.

It's depressing to admit that a good franchise, an awesome work from Lauren Faust, Sabrina Alberghetti and Daniel Ingram have been reduced to this. With all the respect I have towards these creative geniuses, why did you let Hasbro, the main company hack your creation into this?

The singing sequences are irritating. The character design is creepy and just... awful. I do believe it's a parody of MLPFIM. Some little girls and teens disliked it obviously, for; the only good moments on the movie were on the beginning, and the ending when they're what they are: horses. (Do you imagine any Disney or a Bugs Bunny movie where Bugs becomes human?) It's genuinely terrible. Dialogs are pointless, puns are bad and overdone.

On the writing, plot's nonsensical. Other characters supposed to be the protagonist's friends are not there, inexistent. Existing characters who were good ponies in the series are now evil. Forced memes and more stupid dancing, with a very bad, glitches and bugs in the animation. Speaking of, I think the bad animation played a very high part into making this "movie" like some kind of parody or something. if it was a TV show i'd laugh my ass off, but there, I know people paid to watch this.

80% of the movie or more is about "dancing" on silly dance music. once it's okay, but having 3. 4. and another one, you really want to leave.

I was staring at the green sign that says "emergency exit" glowing on the darkness of the theater. one family left because their daughter and son wanted to leave. they had enough of this silly cartoon, but I ain't no kid, I made it until the end, where Twilight comes back to normal with her crown! that was but a nightmare !

They tried to make it funny, which was even worse if not embarrassing and that day I really wanted, if not needed to watch something funny.

To sum up : it seems that Hasbro has found back through MLP a very huge and important audience, so they put the maximum to extract what they could from this audience. This has nothing to do with MLPFIM. This is just an incredibly bad "movie".

Sorry again for rating this as awful, but that's all I can give. It was an error from DHX and we all have to learn from our errors. (That quote's from an MLPFIM episode that was the radical opposite of everything on this movie BTW. )

Wtf?!

Wtf is this?! Honestly the show is one thing but now there's a freaking movie that doesn't even match the freaking base of all the my little pony episodes! First off let me start with the fact that when I was 6 or 7 my little pony was my favorite toy of the year, then as I got older they pretty much slowed down with the toys and started thinking of episodes for the toy then as the age now they have episodes of my little pony which is shown on the hub and season one on Netflix. Now time to talk about this lame azz movie they're making. First off these are colorful ponies with different talents and different personalities, and I watched the preview and I sat there and had a moment of shame... Wtf were they thinking?! Are they honestly trying to confuse these kids?! THEY ARE PONIES!!!! Not freaking humans especially not COLOR coded humans!!! I have a soon to be 2 year old god sister who most likely end up watching this failed childhood show!!! And I don't want her growing up watching trash shows. I grew up to Mr.Rodgers and Teletubbies. She has to grow up to Yo gabba gabba and this crap!

The worst cartoon ever has been created.

Forget this movie. I always loved MLP from the community works, fan art, the series created by Lauren Faust and even the previous ones. My Little Pony is a very clever, philosophical and modern story with a different view than everything you see on the TV. You'll laugh, you're relax when you watch it and it makes all of us smile, regardless our age or gender.

But Equestria Girls isn't My Little Pony. The philosophy is the radical opposite, the animation is bad, characters looks like robots. There's nothing about friendship, it's commercial and characters are dumb, and selfish... it's so bad, it's embarrassing.

I can't believe I purchased a ticket to watch this movie! Sound is just stereo from a well-known sound bank. Scenario is like written by a 16yo kid.

My curiosity has gone too far, if that's what Hasbro wants to do, this is a controlled destruction of this community nothing more, and an ugly plot to sell toys and dolls to little girls.

Hopefully it's so awful I'm pretty sure the exact opposite will happen and that's good.

awful.

I knew it was not a MLP movie, but a parallel series so I decided to watch it anyways, I had faith in the actors, and the writers knowing the work they did for the MLP:FIM TV series. The scenario is bad and pompous, if not playing on teen clichés,picking a good nerd and a bully, Oh my God she stole the crown! All that with a disgusting taste of product placements. Character design was what I apprehended most, but the music was even more annoying. Anorexic girls; cosmopolitan students being cool and stereotypical, with a very robotic animation and glitches every minutes. I regret what I did this afternoon. I'd better be alone, at home, not even Derpy Hooves can save this movie.

Twilight Sparkle becomes a human to get her crown back.

Words can't describe how patently awful this movie was. Everything from the plot to the pacing to the songs to the dialogue was incredibly hackneyed and forced. As someone who has had a general familiarity with the My Little Pony franchise, I have to say that this excuse for a movie runs contrary to everything which the previous couple of years have strived for. Excellence in animation, well rounded characters, an engrossing storyline. It is apparent that this movie signals a change in the series which in all honesty seems more of a forced intervention by others wishing to influence the franchise rather than any real attempt at artistic expressions. I would not recommend this movie to anyone, whether it be to parents with children, or general fans of My Little Pony.

Skip Equestria Girls, stick to the cartoon.

Holy Celestia! That movie was so bad it's laughable. The theater was already almost empty, only a few girls and their parents were there and myself. Some left after the first 30 minutes, I made it 'til the end. No need to write spoilers, it's so bad anyways. I wouldn't even encourage people to pirate it.

Things to take in consideration -There was an important BUDGET for this. -This is created by PROFESSIONAL CG ANIMATORS and GRAPHIC DESIGNERS! -Tara Strong and Ashleigh Ball did her best but this cartoon will be a burden on their resume more than anything -Was that so hard to at least make a good soundtrack? -The only funny scenes are the ones you see on the trailer, the rest looks more like a Mr Bean episode starring Twilight Sparkle. Her friends are background characters. -There's no moral or anything. I'm usually a tolerant person but this thing deserves a 0, or they will never learn.

Terrible, but a little fun

This film definitely had potential, no question about it. I feel I enjoyed it about as much as one can enjoy a film, while simultaneously not caring about the plot at all. The (fairly large) problem with EG is that it does a horrible job of making the main conflict seem important. Smaller conflicts (Twilight being framed, The Mane 6 being torn apart by SS), are resolved trivially, immediately dissolving much of the tension. The plot starts to feel unfocused, and many viewers, like myself, get the feeling that noting of consequence is happening. The only other complaint I have is that the humor was noticeably weak, even compared to the show. Oftentimes, much of the entertainment value in the show comes from the humor. All we really get in EG is Twilight not understanding how the human world works, and it gets old, even to cringe levels, really fast. Some genuinely funny moments could have broken up the monotony, and really helped the entertainment value of the film. Shame. Now, I do not agree completely with all of these 1/10 reviewers. I actually quite enjoyed the musical numbers, and the song-and-dance routine in the school cafeteria was the highlight of the film for me. I thought all of the songs were very solid, and did a lot to keep my interest. I also really liked the character design/art style, and actually didn't mind the unnatural skin colors. It sort of keeps their race ambiguous, which is interesting to me (have I been interpreting the ponies as a certain race? How has everyone else been interpreting them?). I probably was only able to tolerate the bland and badly-executed plot because I like the show and liked the idea of making the characters human. I liked the songs and I liked how the characters looked. I suppose it did alright at keeping my interest throughout, but I would be lying if I didn't say I was a little disappointed. MLP is not the kind of show where a bad film is going to ruin it for me (if that were the case the season 3 finale would have already done that). I suppose I can tentatively recommend the film to anyone who likes the show, as long as you keep your expectations down. Anyone who doesn't already like the show, avoid this, because it's stupid.

This Movie Was Awful Badly Done Not Worth Watching A Second Time!!!!!

Warning: Spoilers

For a start... it definitely did not warrant a theater's release.

No additional effort was put into the animation beyond the TV series other than the opening credits animation, at all. Would have been a nice two-parter to link the existing My Little Pony seasons 3 and 4 together.

Two, it's so obvious the entire movie is a giant advertisement for Hasbro to sell Anthropology-based dolls based on popular characters. The way

the characters are introduced and stylized, it's just glaring and grating.

The basic story? As predictable as ever, even for a MLP episode. Which is fine for a MLP episode, but not for a movie, hence back to my original belief it didn't warrant a theater's release. The fact that it's set in such a tedious and over-used setting as a school formal? Awful. So much opportunity for this to have been done better was wasted on a cliché. The ponies are regressed to teenage years when in Ponyville they are already mares, I've mature. The movie should have reflected this, and used it to encourage girls (and guys) in a more positive direction than what it does.

The writing was about as standard as the series, but I'm disappointed with the whole image of the movie. Everyone is thin and anatomic, with the exception of Snails, and lo and behold, the unpopular "bad guy henchman" is fat.

Instead, we got wreck. It's 4, perhaps a 5 out of 10. For the absolute littlest only, and I say that with hesitation given the body-image impressions it's setting up for them.

I hope this stays a one-off, and is never attempted again, also a Little Message to Hasbro!!!

P.S. Screw You Hasbro And Your Fan Pandering Bullshit!!!!
